The Phantom Menace (1999) follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his Padawan, twenty-five-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) in 32 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). The two are sent to negotiate with the Viceroy of the Trade Federation, who has been ordered to kill the Jedi and begin an invasion with an army of battle droids by Darth Sidious, a Sith Lord. The duo manages to escape and flees to Naboo. With the battle droids now on the ground and the invasion begun, Qui-Gon, in the midst of the chaos, saves a Gungan named Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best). Jar Jar, now indebted to Qui-Gon, leads them to the Gungans' underwater city, Otoh Gunga. They attempt to persuade the Gungan leader, Boss Nass (Brian Blessed), to assist the surface-dwelling people of Naboo against the invasion, but fail. They then go to Naboo's capital, Theed, and rescue Queen Amidala. The group escapes from Naboo using her starship and begin their travel to the Republic capital planet, Coruscant. As they attempt to get through the Federation blockade, their ship is damaged from the crossfire, causing its hyperdrive to malfunction. They land on the desert planet Tatooine to repair it. Qui-Gon, Jar Jar, an astromech droid named R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), and fourteen-year-old handmaiden Padmé Naberrie (Natalie Portman) make their way to Mos Espa in search of a new part for their hyperdrive. They end up with junk dealer Watto (Andy Secombe) and his nine-year-old slave Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who mistakes Padmé for an angel upon meeting her. They also meet Anakin's mother, Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August), and the protocol droid Anakin built, C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and learn that Anakin is a talented pilot. Qui-Gon senses that Anakin is strong in the force and becomes convinced that he is the Chosen One prophesized to bring balance to the force. Anakin wins the race, joining the group and leaving behind his still enslaved mother. On their way back to the ship, Qui-Gon and Anakin are attacked by Darth Maul, Sidious's apprentice. Qui-Gon and Maul duel, and Qui-Gon manages to escape. Now back on Coruscant, Qui-Gon reports to the Jedi Council, lead by Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) and Yoda (Frank Oz) about his encounter with the Sith, as the Jedi had believed the Sith to be extinct for over the past millennium. He also requests permission to trade Anakin as a Jedi, but the Council denies it, as they worry Anakin being far older than they allow Jedi to begin being trained makes him vulnerable to the dark side of the Force. Despite this, Qui-Gon vows that he will take Anakin as his apprentice. Naboo's Senator Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) persuades Queen Amidala to call for a vote of no confidence in Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum (Terence Stamp) so they can elect a more capable leader. She successfully pushes for the vote, however, she becomes increasingly frustrated with the corruption in the senate and decides to return to Naboo. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are ordered to accompany her and investigate the return of the Sith. Once they reach Naboo, Padmé reveals that she had secretly been the queen in disguse all alongm and gets the Gungans to join her against the Trade Federation. Jar Jar is promoted to general, joining his tribe against the droid army. During a battle in the hangar, Anakin hides inside a starfighter, accidentally triggering its autopilot, taking him into the midst of a battle in space. He accidentally causes the destruction of the Trade Federation's droid control ship from the inside out, deactivating the army. Meanwhile, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan enter a duel with Darth Maul. Maul kills Qui-Gon, causing Obi-Wan to cut Maul in half horizontally and send him down a shaft. Qui-Gon uses his final breath to request that Obi-Wan train Anakin. Palpatine is elected Chancellor and Yoda promotes Obi-Wan to the rank of Jedi Knight, accepting Anakin as Obi-Wan's apprentice.

Attack of the Clones (2002) takes place in 22 BBY. It now stars thirty-five-year-old Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and his nineteen-year-old Padawan Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christiansen). The Galactic Republic is threatened by a Separatist movement lead by former Jedi Master turned Sith Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). Twenty-four-year-old Senator Padmé Amidala travels to Coruscant to vote against a motion to create an army for the Jedi to use against the Separatists. Upon arrival, she narrowly avoids an assassination attempt. Due to this attack, she is placed under the protection of Anakin and Obi-Wan. The two manage to prevent a second assassination attempt against her and chase down the assassin, Zam Wesell (Leeanna Walsman). Before they can learn the identity of her empoyer, a bounty hunter, he kills her. The Jedi Council instructs Obi-Wan to find him, while Anakin is instructed with escorting Padmé to Naboo, leading the two to fall in love, despite the Jedi Code forbidding this. Obi-Wan is lead to the ocean planet of Kamino where he discovers that a clone army based off the genetic template of bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison) is being created for the Republic under the name of deceased Jedi Master Sifo-Diyas. Obi-Wan realizes Jango is the bounty hunter who hired Zam Wesell. The two battle, and Obi-Wan places a homing beacon on Jango's ship bfore he takes off. He then follows Jango and his clone son, Boba (Daniel Logan), to the planet Geonosis. Anakin begins to have visions of his mother in pain, causing him to return to his home planet of Tatooine alongside Padmé. They find Watto, who reveals to the couple that Shmi was bought, freed, and married by moisture farmer Cliegg Lars (Nathan Hall). The two make their way to Cliegg's farm, where they meet him alongside his son from his previous wife, Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton), and Owen's girlfriend, Beru Whitesun (Bonnie Piesse). Cliegg explains to them that Tusken Raiders abducted Anakin's mother a month earlier. Anakin finds the Tuskens' camp and finds his mother barely alive. She dies in his arms, causing him to massacre the entire tribe in a rage. He confesses his actions to Padmé and vows that he will prevent his loved ones' deaths. On Geonosis, Obi-Wan discovers a Separatist gathering led by Count Dooku. Obi-Wan tramsits his findings to the Jedi Council but is discovered and captured by Separatist droids. Dooku finds Obi-Wan in his cell and tells him that Darth Didious controls a large portion of the Galactic Senate, inviting Obi-Wan to join him to help stop Sidious. Obi-Wan refuses. Jar Jar Binks, now a Senate Representative, proposes a vote to grant emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine, which succeeds, allowing the clone army to be authorized. Anakin and Padmé head to Geonosis to save Obi-Wan. The couple enters a Geonosian droid factory, where they are captured by Jango after Anakin loses his lightsaber. Dooku sentences the trio to death in an arena where they are attacked by large monsters. They are suddenly saved by a battalion of clone troopers led by Yoda, Mace Windu, and many other Jedi. Windu decapitated Jango in front of Boba. Obi-Wan and Anakin enter in a duel against Dooku, where Obi-Wan is injured and Anakin loses his right arm. Yoda intervenes, defending them. Dooku escapes to Coruscant and delivers the schematics for the Death Star to Sidious. The Jedi Council is disturbed by Dooku's claim that Sidious controlst he Senate, and the Clone Wars begin. Anakin and Padmé are secretly married on Naboo.

Revenge of the Sith (2005) takes place in 19 BBY, continuing to follow thirty-eight-year-old Obi-Wan and twenty-two-year-old Anakin, who is now a Jedi Knight himself. The duo is on a mission to rescue Supreme Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous (Matthew Wood), the cyborg Separatist commander. After infiltrating the generals flagship, the two battle Count Dooku. Obi-Wan is knocked out, but Anakin manages to take him down. Palpatine requests that Anakin kill the Sith, but Anakin refuses, as it's not the Jedi way. Palpatine continues to persuade Anakin, finally suceeding, and Anakin decapitates Dooku. Palpatine and Anakin then go to escape the ship. Palpatine tries to make Anakin leave Obi-Wan behind, but Anakin won't, slinging him over his shoulder. Anakin crash-lands the ship on Corouscant, where he reuinites with twenty-seven-year-old Padmé, who reveals she is pregnant. That night, Anakin has visions similar to those he had of his mother before her death, this time of Padmé dying in childbirth. Palpatine appoints Anakin to be his personal representative on the Jedi Council, as the rank of Jedi Master is one of Anakin's greatest wishes and a seat on the Council guarantees that title. Hpwever, the Council distrusts Palpatine, and while they allow Anakin a seat on the Council, they refuse him the rank of Master. Instead, they have him spy on Palpatine, causing Anakin's faith in the Jedi to diminish. On Utapau, Grievous moves the Separatist leaders to the volcanic planet of Mustafar. Obi-Wan travels to Utapau where he kills Grievous, while Yoda travels to the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk to defend it from a Separatist invasion. Palpatine tempts Anakin towards the dark side of the Force, promising it can save Padmé from the fate Anakin sees in his visions. Anakin realizes from this that Palpatine is Darth Sidious, and reports this discovery to Mace Windu. Windu, with Kit Fisto (Ben Cooke), Agen Kolar (Tux Akindoyeni), and Saesee Tiin (Khan Bonfils) to confront and arrest Palpatine. Palpatine quickly kills all but Windu, who overpowers him and gets him in front of a shattered window. Anakin, desperate to save Padmé, stops Windu from killing Palpatine, who then sends Windu out the window to his death. Anakin pledges himself to Palpatine, who then gives him the name Darth Vader. Palpatine issues Order 66, activating a chip in the clones' brains that takes away their free will and makes them kill all the Jedi. Vader and his clone battalion, the 501st, kill the remaining Jedi in the Temple, including the Younglings. Vader then travels to Mustafar where he destroys the Separatist leaders, while Palpatine declares himself the Emperor of the new Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan and Yoda return to Coruscant where they learn of Anakin's actions. Yoda instructs Obi-Wan to confront Vader while he goes after Palpatine. Obi-Wan finds Padmé, hoping to get Vader's whereabouts from her, explaining to her what happened. Padmé refuses to reveal his location to Obi-Wan, and then travels to Mustafar herself. She pleads Vader to return from the dark side, however, Obi-Wan then appears from her ship, revealing that he had secretly stowed away without her knowledge. However, Anakin believes that Padmé betrayed him and brought Obi-Wan there on purpose. He then strangles her, causing her to pass out. Obi-Wan initiates a duel with Vader, where he severs Vader's legs and remaining arm. He takes his lightsaber and leaves him to die near a lava river, which burns Vader's flesh off. Yoda's battle with Palpatine results in a stalemate. Yoda then flees with Senator Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), and the two regroup with Obi-Wan and Padmé on Polis Massa. Padmé gives birth to twins whom she names Luke and Leia. She uses her last words to say she believes their to still be good within Vader. Palpatine discovers Vader, bringing him back to Coruscant. Vader's body is encased in the black life-support suit he is famous for. Palpatine tells Vader he killed Padmé in his anger. Obi-Wan and Yoda hide the twins' birth, altering Padmé's body to appear still-pregnant so it appears the twins died alongside her. Bail and his wife, Breha (Rebecca Jackson Mendoza) adopt Leia, and Obi-Wan takes Luke to live with Anakin's step-brother, Owen, on Tatooine, where Obi-Wan can watch over the boy.

A New Hope (1977), our world's first film introduction to the Star Wars universe, takes in 0 BBY, now starring Anakin and Padmé's nineteen-year-old twin children, farmboy Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Imperial Senator Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). Leia, who is secretly one of the leaders of the Rebellion, is in posession of these schematics, but her ship is intercepted by an Imperial Star Destroyer. Leia hides the plans in R2-D2's memory system, who flees alongside C-3PO in an escape pod to Tatooine. While Luke is cleaning Artoo, he discovers a holographic recording of Leia asking for help from Obi-Wan Kenobi. Artoo runs away to find Obi-Wan, where Luke and Threepio then pursue him. They are attacked by Tusken Raiders, but then saved by fifty-seven-year-old hermit "Old Ben" Kenobi (Alec Guinness), who then reveals that he is actually Obi-Wan Kenobi, and was once a Jedi. He tells Luke about his father, which shocks Luke as he had been told his whole life that his father had been a navigator on a spice freightor. Obi-Wan explains to Luke how his former pupil, Darth Vader, had betrayed and murdered his father. Luke is offered Anakin's old lightsaber. Artoo plays Obi-Wan Leia's message, in which she requests that Obi-Wan take the Death Star plans to her adoptive father on Alderaan. Obi-Wan offers Luke to join him, but Luke refuses, as despite his dreams to fly away from Tatooine, he has to help his aunt and uncle on the farm. When he returns to the farm, however, he discovers his aunt and uncle murdered by Imperial stormtroopers. Now, with nowhere else to go, he travels with Obi-Wan to Mos Eisley in search for transport off the planet. The two come across thirty-two-year-old Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a smuggler indebpted to local mobster Jabba the Hutt (Larry Ward), and his companion Wookiee Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew). Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, Chewie, Artoo, and Threepio flee on Han's ship the Milennium Fakcon while pursued by stormtroopers. Before the group can reach Alderaan, Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) uses the Death Star to destroy the planet as punishment for Leia not telling him the location of the Rebel base. The Falcon is captured by the Death Star's tractor beam, but the group manages to evade capture by hiding in the smuggling compartments beneath the ship's floors. They knock out two stormtroopers and Luke and Han don their armor. As Obi-Wan leaves to diasble the tractor beam to they can escape, Luke discovers Leia is scheduled to be executed. He convinces Han and Chewie to help him save the princess. After rescuing her, they hide in a garbage compactor. After Obi-Wan disables the tractor beam and the others escape from the garbage compactor, they are reuinited in the hanger containing the Falcon, where the group discovers Obi-Wan locked in combat with Vader. After seeing Leia with them, Obi-Wan sacrifices himself to allow them to escape. The Empire places a tracking device on the Falcon, leading them to the Rebel base on Yavin IV. Using the plans they were able to get thanks to Leia and Artoo, the Rebels discover a weakness in the Death Star's thermal exhaust port. Luke joins the battle where the Rebels suffer many losses as Vader leaders a squadron of TIE fighers against them. Han and Chewie unexpectedly aid them in the Falcon and knock Vader off course before he can shoot down Luke's X-Wing. Guided by Obi-Wan's voice through the Force, Luke uses it to aim his torpedoes into the exhaust port, destroying the Death Star moments before it can fire on the Rebel base. Leia awards Luke and Han medels for their heroism.

He manages to use the force to retrieve his lightsaber and escape the creature, but soon succumbs to hypothermia. Before he loses conciousness, however, he is visited by Obi-Wan Kenobi's Force ghost, who instructs him to go to the swampy planet Dagobah to train under Yoda. Han Solo, now thirty-five, discovers Luke, and brings him back to the Rebel base where he can recieve medial help. Han and Leia are arguing a lot, so after Luke wakes up, Leia kisses him to make Han jealous, and while, yeah, they don't know they're related yet, it's still hella weird, Gogy. The Empire launches an attack on the Rebel base, forcing the Rebels to evacuate. Han, Leia, C-3PO, and Chewie escape abord the Millennium Falcon while Luke and R2-D2 head to Dagobah so Luke can continue his training to become a Jedi. He crash lands into the water, then meeting Yoda who reluctantly accepts him as an apprentice after speaking with Obi-Wan's ghost. Yoda trains Luke to master the light side of the force and resist negative emotions that will turn him to the dark side. Luke struggles to control his negative feelings, however. Luke has a premonition of his friends in distress and, despite Obi-Wan and Yoda protesting otherwise, he abandons his training with Yoda to save them. Meanwhile, on Bespin, Han is betrayed by his friend Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), and Vader freezes him in carbonite after Leia confesses her love to him. Han's frozen body is given to Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch), who has a bounty on him from Jabba the Hutt. The remaining group makes their way back to the Falcon and escapes. Luke then arrives to the city, engaging Vader in a lightsaber duel over the city's central air shaft, where Vader severs Luke's right hand. Vader attempts to persuade Luke to the dark side, to help him destroy the Emperor so they can rule the galaxy together. Luke refuses, as he believes Vader killed his father. Vader then reveals the truth that, no, Vader is Luke's father. Distressed, Luke drops into the air shafts and is ejected beneath the floating city where he then latches onto an antenna. He then reaches out to Leia through the force to save him, and the Falcon returns to save him.

Luke arrives to bargain for the release of his friends, however, he is dropped through a trapdoor into a chamber where he is to be eaten by a rancor. Luke slays the monster, and Jabba sentences him, Han, and Chewbacca to death via sarlacc. Luke hides his lightsaber in R2-D2, who launches it to him right as he's to be executed. Han accidentally damages Boba Fett's jet pack, causing him to fall into the sarlacc. Leia strangles Jabba to death with her chains. The group escapes after blowing up Jabba's barge. Luke and R2-D2 return to Dagobah to continue his training with Yoda as the others return to the Rebel Alliance. When Luke arrives to Dagobah, however, he discovers Yoda is dying. Yoda confirms that Vader is Luke's father, and reveals that there is another Skywalker, before he dies. Palpatine is enraged, torturing Luke with Force lightning. Vader refuses to let his son die, so he betrays Palpatine and throws him down a reactor shaft to his death. However, in the process, he is electrocuted. Vader requests that Luke remove his helmet so he can see him with his own eyes. Anakin Skywalker dies, redeemed.
